M assoud Hossaini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, on December 10, 1981. During his childhood, his family moved to neighboring Iran to escape the war between the Soviet Army and the Mujahideen. He grew up in the religious city of Mashhad, Iran, where he graduated from high school in 1998. At the age of 17, he discovered his passion for photography. After returning to Afghanistan, he enrolled in a two-year photojournalism program at the AINA Photojournalism Institute in Kabul, founded by Reza Deghati and Manoocher Deghati. In 2004, he began working as a freelance photojournalist for BBC Persian Online. In 2006, he joined Agence France-Presse (AFP) as a full-time photojournalist. His photographs have been published in The Sunday Times Magazine (London), Gent Magazine (Italy), EGO Magazine, the BBC website, and the China Morning Post (Hong Kong). He has also participated in group exhibitions in Germany, India, the United States, and Pakistan, supported by the Goethe-Institut, as well as exhibitions in Berlin and other German cities supported by the IFA Institute.
Masoud Hosseini’s photography explores the human stories behind Afghanistan’s most important moments. His work focuses on people, culture, conflict, resilience, and the everyday realities of life.
Through his camera, he documents stories that might otherwise remain unseen, bringing the experiences of Afghan people to audiences around the world.
